Civic service 🤝
Explore civic service volunteer opportunities connected with structured programmes that involve a defined period of service for a community, public-interest organisation or social project. These programmes may be organised nationally or internationally and can have specific eligibility rules, dates, supervision and financial support.
Civic service should not be used as a general label for every volunteer exchange. Informal work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host., workcamps, internships and European Solidarity Corps projects have their own more specific tags when those descriptions are more accurate.
What is civic service? 🤝
For this archive, civic service means a structured period of voluntary service carried out through a recognised programme for a community or public-interest purpose. It normally has clearer conditions than an informal volunteer exchange, such as defined eligibility, duration, responsibilities and supervision. Civic service should not be confused with a civil service job in government administration.
Structured programmes and conditions
Depending on the programme, participants may receive accommodation, meals, insurance, travel support or a personal allowance. These arrangements vary considerably, so check exactly what is covered and whether the opportunity has official eligibility, residence or visa requirements.
When a project belongs specifically to the European Solidarity Corps, Erasmus+ or a workcamp programme, those more precise classifications should normally be used as well.
