What is a cave house?

Living in a cave house does not automatically mean living without modern facilities. Electricity, running water, heating, ventilation, internet access and sanitation depend entirely on the individual property.

Living conditions and safety

Cave dwellings can have very different conditions from conventional accommodation. Before travelling, ask about ventilation, humidity, heating or cooling, drinking water, sanitation, electricity, natural light and safe access to the property.

If renovation or construction is involved, confirm the condition of the structure, what tools and protective equipment are provided and who supervises the work. Volunteers should not undertake structural alterations or specialist construction tasks beyond their experience.

Some cave house projects are also remote or off-grid. In these cases, check access to healthcare, shops and public transport, mobile coverage and whether you can leave independently if necessary.

Cave accommodation and commercial projects

Some cave houses operate as hotels, guesthouses or other paid accommodation. Regular reception, housekeeping, cleaning, food preparation or other productive duties for a commercial business may be considered employment under local labour or immigration rules even when accommodation is provided instead of a salary.

Before travelling, check whether the activities are permitted under your immigration status. Tourist or visitor entry does not automatically allow every form of unpaid work exchange.
