Blindness, low vision and Braille
Blindness and low vision describe different forms and degrees of vision impairment, and people’s functional vision and accessibility needs vary widely. Braille is a tactile reading and writing system used by some blind and low vision people, but it should not be assumed that everyone uses Braille or the same assistive tools.
Accessibility and volunteer roles
Useful roles may include accessible document preparation, digital accessibility, reading or describing visual information, administrative assistance, technology support or supervised educational activities. Volunteers should ask people or organisations what support is actually wanted rather than assuming what someone needs.
Orientation and mobility training, vision rehabilitation, eye care, therapy, specialist education and personal care may require professional qualifications or specific training. Volunteers should not replace qualified staff or take responsibility for specialist support without appropriate competence and supervision.
