African organizations 🌍

Volunteers supporting an organisation in Ghana

Explore organizations in Africa seeking volunteers, including NGOs, non-profit organisations, charities, community-based initiatives, associations and other organised projects across the continent.

This section focuses on the type of host rather than simply the geographical location. It is intended for opportunities connected with organisations operating in African countries, while the main Africa archive includes all types of hosts and projects located across the continent.

Some organisations may welcome international volunteers in person, while others may offer remote or online roles. Some listings are archival or may no longer be recruiting, so always check the publication date and current conditions before applying.

About this section

The presence of an organisation in this archive does not mean that Voluntouring.org has independently verified its legal status, local ownership, leadership, impact or governance. Read the individual listing and check the organisation directly before making travel, volunteering or financial commitments.

What do we mean by organizations in Africa?

For this Voluntouring section, the term refers broadly to organised initiatives operating in African countries and looking for volunteers or other forms of support.

These may include:

  • NGOs;
  • non-profit organisations;
  • registered charities;
  • community-based organisations;
  • associations;
  • educational or social organisations;
  • environmental and conservation organisations;
  • animal welfare organisations;
  • other structured community initiatives.

A private family, individual homestead, ordinary commercial hostel or privately operated farm should not automatically receive this tag simply because it is located in Africa.

Organizations in Africa and locally led projects

Many travellers specifically look for opportunities to connect directly with organisations working in the places they visit.

This can help travellers discover community-based initiatives and organisations that may receive less international visibility than large volunteer-tourism companies.

However, an organisation being based in an African country does not automatically tell us who owns, leads or controls it. Voluntouring should only describe a project as locally led, community led or similar when that information is actually supported by the organisation or other reliable information.

Likewise, a foreign-founded organisation operating in Africa should not automatically be presented as a local organisation simply because its projects are located there.

What kinds of volunteer roles can organisations offer?

Volunteer roles depend on the organisation’s mission and current needs. They may include:

  • education and teaching support;
  • administration and organisational support;
  • fundraising and grant research;
  • communications and social media;
  • community projects;
  • agriculture and food-related initiatives;
  • environmental conservation;
  • animal welfare;
  • health-related programmes where appropriately qualified participants are required;
  • construction or maintenance;
  • research and documentation;
  • online and remote volunteering;
  • other activities according to the organisation’s current needs.

A long list of possible activities should not substitute for a clearly defined volunteer role. Ask what you will actually do, who will supervise you and why the organisation currently needs that support.

Online volunteering with African organisations

Not every opportunity associated with this section requires travelling to Africa.

Some organisations may look for remote volunteers to help with fundraising research, websites, writing, administration, databases, communication or other digital tasks.

For example, Voluntouring has published remote volunteering opportunities connected with Nigerian organisations. In these cases, the organisation may belong in this section even though the participant remains in their own country.

You can also browse the broader online volunteering section.

Check what kind of organisation it is

Terms such as NGO, charity, foundation, community-based organisation and non-profit can have different legal meanings in different countries.

If legal status or governance is important to your decision, ask the organisation directly and, where possible, check the appropriate national registry or official information.

Useful questions include:

  • when the organisation was established;
  • where it is registered or based;
  • who manages its activities;
  • what its main programmes are;
  • who supervises volunteers;
  • how long international volunteers normally stay;
  • how volunteers fit alongside employees and local participants;
  • whether financial reports or project information are publicly available where relevant.

A professional-looking website, registration number or social-media presence does not by itself guarantee good volunteer practices.

Volunteering should respond to a real need

International volunteering is most useful when organisations define the role according to their actual needs rather than designing activities primarily to provide an experience for visitors.

Before participating, ask why an international volunteer is appropriate for the role and whether the same activity could reasonably be performed by a local employee or professional.

Short-term volunteers are usually better suited to clearly defined supporting roles than to responsibilities requiring long-term continuity, specialist professional knowledge or strong relationships with vulnerable people.

Children and vulnerable communities

Many organisations in the current archive work with children, education, health or vulnerable communities. These roles require additional care.

A volunteer should not receive inappropriate unsupervised access to children or vulnerable people simply because they have travelled from abroad or paid a programme fee.

Ask about safeguarding procedures, role boundaries, supervision, privacy and any background checks required by the organisation or local law.

Professional responsibilities such as healthcare, counselling, social work or specialised teaching should only be undertaken by appropriately qualified and authorised people.

For more guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safer approaches to volunteering around children.

Volunteer fees and financial contributions

There is no single financial model for volunteering with organisations in Africa.

Some opportunities provide accommodation and meals without charging a mandatory participant fee. Others may provide only part of these costs or request a contribution for accommodation, meals, supervision, transport or programme activities.

A paid programme should not automatically be considered more impactful than a free one, and a free programme should not automatically be considered more responsible.

If payment is required, ask:

  • the exact amount;
  • whether payment is mandatory;
  • what the amount covers;
  • who receives the money;
  • whether accommodation and meals are included;
  • whether additional charges apply;
  • what cancellation and refund conditions apply.

Voluntouring does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations.

Justice tourism and guest stays

Some NGOs and non-profit organisations may also welcome travellers as paying guests or supporters without requiring them to volunteer.

When this guest-based option is genuinely available and clearly separated from volunteer or work-exchange arrangements, the organisation may also fit Voluntouring’s Justice Tourism section.

An organisation can therefore offer several distinct arrangements, such as an NGO volunteering programme, work exchange and guest accommodation. The conditions of each option should be explained separately.

Visas and immigration

There is no single visa rule for volunteering across Africa.

Requirements depend on the country, nationality, type of organisation, activities performed, duration of stay and whether the participant receives accommodation, meals, pocket money or other benefits.

Do not assume that tourist entry automatically permits NGO work, teaching, healthcare, work exchange or other volunteering.

Likewise, there is no general rule that organisations cannot provide invitation or supporting letters. Whether they can or should do so depends on the programme and immigration system involved.

Check official immigration information for the specific destination before travelling.

You can also read Voluntouring’s general guide to visas for volunteering abroad.

Travel conditions vary across Africa

Africa contains more than fifty countries and an enormous variety of political, social, economic and geographical conditions.

Avoid treating the continent as though volunteer conditions, security, infrastructure, costs or community needs were the same everywhere.

For in-person opportunities, check the precise country, region and project location and consult current official travel advice for your nationality.

Older positive volunteer experiences should not be used as evidence that a particular area remains suitable for travel today.

How to use this page

Browse the organisations and opportunities below and open the complete announcement that interests you.

Check the publication date first, because many organisations in this archive have appeared on Voluntouring for several years and their activities, fees and volunteer programmes may have changed.

Before applying, confirm:

  • the organisation currently operates;
  • the exact project location or whether the role is online;
  • the specific volunteer activities;
  • skills or qualifications required;
  • training and supervision;
  • weekly hours and days off;
  • accommodation and meals for in-person roles;
  • minimum stay;
  • fees or other financial arrangements;
  • safeguarding procedures where relevant;
  • health and insurance requirements;
  • visa or immigration requirements for the proposed activities.

Look for the contact details or application instructions in the individual listing and verify current conditions directly with the organisation.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, certify organisations, verify their legal status or measure their social impact unless explicitly stated otherwise. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute endorsement or a recommendation.

For additional guidance, read safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
