Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or provide accommodation, meals or other benefits. Paid jobs and internships may have different conditions. If money is requested or offered, confirm exactly what the arrangement includes before making a commitment.

Visas, volunteering and work in South Korea

Entry and immigration requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and planned activities. Tourist, visa-free or short-term visitor status should not automatically be assumed to permit regular employment, paid teaching or every type of work exchange.

South Korea uses different immigration categories for short-term visits and employment. If an opportunity involves fixed working hours, regular teaching, hospitality work or payment, ask the host which status applies and verify it independently through the official Korea Visa Portal.

Eligible travellers from participating countries and regions may also consider South Korea’s Working Holiday programme, which permits temporary work subject to nationality-specific eligibility and programme conditions.

Language exchange and teaching

Some opportunities involve conversation practice, language cafés, tutoring or cultural exchange. An informal language exchange is not necessarily the same as employment as a teacher, particularly when there are fixed duties, regular hours or financial compensation.

Clarify the role before travelling and make sure that the description used by the host matches the actual activities you will undertake.
