Visas and volunteering in Burundi
Entry requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and planned activities. Do not assume that tourist or visitor status automatically permits every form of volunteering, teaching or work exchange.
Before travelling, check the current visa and entry requirements with the Burundian embassy or consulate responsible for your country of residence and confirm with the host whether any additional authorisation or registration applies to your activities.
Current travel considerations
Security conditions vary across Burundi. Current travel advice warns against travel to some areas close to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and around parts of Kibira National Park because of armed-group activity and possible cross-border incursions.
The security situation along the Burundi-DRC border can change quickly, and the land border between Burundi and Rwanda is currently closed. If a project is located near an international border or in western Burundi, confirm its exact location and consult current travel advice for Burundi before departure.
