How to use this archive
Open the opportunity that interests you and check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline. Seasonal projects, camps, academic programmes and temporary jobs may no longer be available even when the original announcement remains online.
Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.
Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, local transport, minimum stay and any fees, deposits, salary, stipend or other financial arrangements directly with the host or organisation.
Volunteering, work exchange or paid employment?
Not every opportunity in this archive is the same. A community volunteering project, a cultural exchange, an internship and a paid teaching or hospitality position can involve very different legal and practical conditions.
- Volunteering: activities carried out primarily for a community, charitable or non-profit purpose.
- Work exchange: agreed help in return for accommodation, meals or other benefits.
- Cultural or educational programme: an experience where the participant may primarily be attending, learning or exchanging skills rather than working.
- Paid employment: work involving wages or salary and normally subject to employment, tax and immigration rules.
Teaching, childcare, hostel work, farm activities and other practical roles may be regulated even when described informally as volunteering or cultural exchange. Ask the host to explain the arrangement clearly and verify the applicable requirements independently.
Fees and financial arrangements
Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a programme fee, contribution or deposit. Paid jobs, internships and funded programmes may have completely different financial arrangements.
A fee is not automatically a sign of either quality or poor practice. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers, whether it is compulsory and the applicable cancellation or refund conditions. Likewise, if an opportunity is described as “fully funded”, confirm exactly which expenses are included and whether costs are paid in advance or reimbursed later.
Visas, safety and insurance
Entry and immigration rules differ considerably between China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Tourist or visa-free entry should not automatically be assumed to permit paid employment, teaching, commercial work exchanges or every form of volunteering.
Check the appropriate status with the relevant immigration authority or embassy before travelling. Also confirm that your insurance covers the activities involved and check current local conditions, particularly when projects involve outdoor work, physical activities or areas affected by natural hazards.
For additional guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about visas for volunteering, safety and legality and safer alternatives to volunteering with children.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, employ applicants, arrange visas or mediate between participants and hosts. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an organisation or programme.
Important: project availability, participant fees, employment conditions, immigration requirements and local circumstances can change. Confirm current information directly with the host and relevant official authorities before making travel or financial commitments.
