Current safety situation

Security conditions in Lebanon remain affected by regional conflict and can change quickly. Some governments currently advise against travel to Lebanon or to significant parts of the country.

Before considering any trip, check the exact location of the project and consult current official travel advice for your nationality. The U.S. Department of State travel advisory for Lebanon and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office travel advice provide regularly updated information.

Airstrikes, armed conflict, demonstrations, road disruptions and changes to transport or border access can occur with limited notice. Make sure you have an independent emergency and departure plan rather than relying entirely on the host organisation.

Visa and volunteering requirements

Do not assume that a tourist or visitor visa automatically permits every form of volunteering or unpaid work in Lebanon.

Lebanese General Security publishes specific procedures for some volunteers, missionaries and similar participants hosted by legally recognised religious institutions, universities or charitable organisations. Depending on the activity and intended length of stay, the host organisation may need to request authorisation or provide documentation.

Check the latest requirements directly with the Lebanese General Security and the Lebanese embassy or consulate responsible for your nationality before travelling.

Some opportunities may have no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Health, insurance and emergency planning

Confirm that your insurance covers Lebanon, the exact region you intend to visit and the activities you plan to perform. Travel against an official government advisory can affect insurance coverage.

Ask the host about access to healthcare, medication, electricity, communication and transport in an emergency. If you rely on regular medication, consider how you would maintain an adequate supply if travel plans or transport services were disrupted.
