What is a work exchange? 🤝🌏
A work exchange is an arrangement in which a participant provides agreed help and receives something in return, commonly accommodation, meals or both. Around 4 to 5 hours of help per day on approximately five days per week is common in many traditional exchanges, but schedules vary and should be agreed clearly in advance. A work exchange is not automatically the same as volunteering or paid employment.
Work exchange, volunteering or employment?
The label used by a host does not determine the legal status of an activity. Regular shifts or substantial productive work for a commercial business may be treated differently from informal help in a private home or volunteering with a non-profit organisation, even when accommodation or meals are provided instead of wages.
