What is the United Nations Volunteers programme? 🌍🤝
United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is a United Nations programme that promotes volunteerism and mobilises volunteers to support peace and development. It recruits national and international volunteers for assignments with UN entities and their partners. These are formally organised roles rather than informal hospitality exchanges or volunteer travel packages. Learn more through the official UNV website.
UN Volunteer assignments and conditions
UN Volunteers may contribute to public health, community development, humanitarian programmes, environmental initiatives, research, communication and project management. Required qualifications, languages, professional experience and assignment duration vary according to the position.
Under the Conditions of Service introduced in April 2026, assignments use four categories: Community Volunteer, Volunteer Associate, Volunteer Specialist and Volunteer Expert. Selected UN Volunteers receive living allowances and other entitlements according to their assignment. These allowances should not be confused with a conventional employment salary.
UNV also offers online volunteering. These remote assignments have separate conditions and do not provide a living allowance or other financial compensation.
How to become a UN Volunteer
To apply, create a profile in the official UNV Unified Volunteering Platform and search for assignments matching your qualifications, languages, nationality or residence status and availability.
Some positions are open to international applicants, while others recruit national volunteers or have additional eligibility restrictions. Read the individual Description of Assignment carefully, including the duties, application deadline, benefits and required experience.
