Transition towns 🌱🏘️
Interested in Transition Towns volunteering? This page brings together opportunities and articles about community-led Transition initiatives working on local food systems, resource sharing, low-carbon living and stronger local communities.
Transition projects may take place in towns, villages, city neighbourhoods or rural areas. This is a developing archive with only a small number of related listings. Some initiatives welcome travelling volunteers, while others mainly involve local residents and occasional community events.
What are Transition Towns? 🌱🏘️
Transition Towns are part of an international movement that began in Britain and Ireland in the 2000s. Local groups work together to address environmental, economic and social challenges through practical community initiatives. Activities may include local food production, renewable energy, repair and reuse, shared resources and neighbourhood projects. Each initiative develops according to local needs. Volunteering with Transition initiatives
Volunteers may help with community gardens, repair cafés, local food projects, workshops, public events, communication or other activities organised by local groups. Some opportunities involve ongoing participation, while others are occasional events or community workdays.
A Transition Town is not necessarily an eco-villageAn ecovillage is an intentional or traditional community that aims to integrate ecological, social, cultural and economic sustainability into everyday life. or intentional communityAn intentional community is a group of people who deliberately choose to live or organise together around shared values, goals or practices. It may or may not be an ecovillage.. Similarly, not every environmental project or community garden belongs to the Transition movement. If you want to participate in a particular initiative, ask about its activities, organisation and connection to the wider movement.

How to use this page
Check each listing’s publication date and confirm current activities, volunteer roles, working hours, days off and any costs directly with the organisers. If you plan to travel, ask whether accommodation, meals or other arrangements are available. Some local initiatives do not provide volunteer accommodation.
