Slow Food 🥕🍅
Explore slow food volunteer opportunities connected with local food traditions, seasonal ingredients, traditional cooking methods and the relationship between food, people and their communities.
These experiences may take place on farms, in community kitchens, small restaurants, rural hospitality projects or initiatives dedicated to preserving regional food culture. Activities and approaches vary considerably between hosts.
What is Slow Food? 🐌🍅
Slow Food is an international movement that originated in Italy and promotes the idea of food that is good, clean and fair. Its activities include protecting food biodiversity, preserving culinary traditions, supporting food education and promoting fairer food systems. Learn more on the official Slow Food website. The expression “slow food” is also used more generally to describe a thoughtful approach to preparing and enjoying food. A restaurant or project using this expression is not necessarily affiliated with the international movement.
Volunteering and slow food culture
Depending on the project, volunteers may help grow or harvest ingredients, preserve seasonal produce, prepare traditional dishes, support community meals or learn about regional cooking techniques. Some opportunities focus instead on hospitality, food service or the everyday operation of a restaurant.
If you are particularly interested in traditional food preparation or learning about local food systems, ask the host which activities you will actually take part in. Not every food-related exchange includes practical cooking or agricultural work.
