Where is Siberia? 🌲❄️
Siberia is a vast geographical region of northern Asia, extending eastwards from the Ural Mountains across much of Russia. It includes forests, grasslands, mountains, rivers and large areas of permafrost. The region is home to many different communities, languages and cultural traditions, including those of Indigenous Siberian peoples. Its geographical boundaries vary according to the definition used.
Volunteering and rural life in Siberia
Rural hospitality exchanges may involve helping families with vegetable gardens, construction, cooking, maintenance or seasonal activities. Living conditions can vary considerably, particularly in remote settlements with limited transport and infrastructure.
For example, the Red Bench community near Novosibirsk has previously welcomed travellers for practical work and cultural exchange. Its listing was updated in April 2026, but current availability and travel conditions require separate verification.
Travel safety and current restrictions
Important: At the time of this review, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all travel to Russia because of serious security risks, transport disruption and limited consular assistance. Travelling against official advice may also affect insurance coverage.
Voluntouring.org does not recommend travelling to Russia for volunteering or hospitality exchange while these warnings remain in effect. Check the current official travel advice for Russia and the recommendations issued by your own government.
How to use this page
Treat older listings primarily as historical information. Check their publication dates and do not assume that the host, accommodation, activities, fees or contact details remain unchanged.
Before considering any future placement, verify the proposed activities, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay, insurance and any costs. Entry requirements depend on nationality and the purpose of travel. Tourist entry does not automatically authorise every form of volunteering or work exchange.
Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute verification or endorsement of a host, project or its safety arrangements.
