Explore seal volunteering opportunities connected with marine mammal rescue, wildlife rehabilitation, seal monitoring, conservation and research projects where seals are directly involved in the activities.
Some organisations work with injured or stranded seals, while others monitor wild populations, study coastal habitats or help protect breeding and resting areas. Volunteer responsibilities and required qualifications depend on the organisation and the nature of its work.
What are seals? 🦭
Seals are marine mammals belonging to the group known as pinnipeds, which also includes sea lions and walruses. True seals belong to the family Phocidae. They are adapted to life in the water but also spend time on land or ice to rest, reproduce and care for their young. Different seal species inhabit coastal waters, polar regions and other marine environments around the world.
Seal rescue, rehabilitation and conservation
Depending on the project, volunteers may assist with preparing food, cleaning rehabilitation facilities, maintaining equipment, supporting educational activities or recording wildlife observations. Specialist tasks such as handling injured animals, veterinary treatment and rescue operations require appropriate training and supervision.
Some conservation projects focus on observing seals in the wild rather than caring for individual animals. Activities may include population surveys, photo identification, monitoring breeding colonies or collecting information about coastal habitats.
Observing seals responsibly
Wild seals should be observed from a safe distance without touching, feeding or disturbing them. A seal pup resting alone on a beach is not necessarily abandoned. If you encounter an injured or apparently distressed animal, contact a qualified local wildlife rescue organisation rather than attempting to handle it yourself.
For additional guidance, read the NOAA marine wildlife viewing guidelines.
