Retreats 🧘♂️📿
Explore retreat volunteer opportunities and work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. at yoga centres, meditation retreats, spiritual communities, wellness centres and other places offering residential programmes around the world.
Volunteers may help with hospitality, cooking, cleaning, gardening, maintenance, administration or preparing spaces for guests and activities. Some centres also welcome qualified yoga teachers, facilitators and people with other specialised skills.
What is a retreat? 🧘🌿
A retreat is a period spent away from ordinary routines for a particular purpose, often in a residential setting. Retreats may focus on yoga, meditation, spirituality, creativity, nature, education, personal reflection or rest. Some follow a structured programme, while others offer more flexibility. Retreats can be religious, spiritual or entirely secular.
Volunteering at retreat centres
A volunteer at a retreat centre is not necessarily attending the retreat as a participant. Many roles involve helping the centre operate while guests take part in classes, workshops or residential programmes.
If you would like to join yoga sessions, meditation, workshops or other activities, ask whether participation is included in the exchange, available during free time or charged separately. Do not assume that volunteering includes free access to retreats or training.
Before accepting a retreat exchange
Retreat centres may have busy schedules, particularly during guest arrivals, departures and organised events. Ask about daily responsibilities, early morning or evening shifts, days off and whether shared community duties count towards working hours.
Some centres have particular rules concerning silence, diet, clothing, religious practices or participation in communal activities. Make sure these expectations are clear before arriving. If you are expected to teach or provide specialised services, confirm the qualifications, supervision and insurance required.
Retreats may offer wellness practices, but these should not be confused with professional healthcare or guaranteed medical treatments. Regular hospitality work in commercial retreat centres may also be subject to local employment and immigration regulations.
