Planting can be part of many different projects, including farms, community gardens, nurseries, food forestsA food forest is a layered growing system inspired by woodland ecosystems, combining edible trees, shrubs, perennial plants and other useful species., reforestation programmes and land restoration initiatives. Activities vary according to the season, climate and purpose of the project.
What counts as planting? 🌱
Planting includes putting seeds, seedlings, young trees, shrubs or other plants into prepared soil or growing areas. It may involve sowing directly, transplanting nursery plants or establishing new vegetation. General gardening should only be included here when planting is a genuine part of what volunteers are expected to do.
Planting as a volunteer
Tasks may include preparing soil, making planting holes or beds, sowing seeds, transplanting seedlings, planting trees, watering new plants, mulching and carrying out basic aftercare. Some projects combine planting with pruning, composting, harvesting or nursery work.
For tree planting or ecological restoration, ask which species are being planted, why they were selected and what aftercare is planned. Planting alone does not automatically mean that a project constitutes reforestation, conservation or ecological restoration.

Land-based work may involve tools, repetitive physical activity, uneven terrain, heat, rain or other weather conditions.
