What is a pilgrimage journey? 🥾
A pilgrimage is a journey toward a place or destination that holds religious, spiritual, cultural or personal significance. Today, historic pilgrim routes are also walked by people motivated by reflection, long-distance travel, cultural discovery or a personal challenge. Experiences and motivations vary considerably from one traveller to another.
Pilgrimage, volunteering and hospitality
Walking routes can intersect naturally with volunteering and hospitality. Pilgrims may stay in albergues or other simple accommodation, while some hosts along established routes welcome volunteers to help with reception, meals, cleaning, gardening or other practical activities.
Not every accommodation on a pilgrimage route is a volunteer project. If regular work is requested in a commercial hostel or guesthouse, check the hours, exchange conditions and any employment or immigration requirements before committing.
