What is permaculture? 🌱
Permaculture is a design approach that draws on ecological relationships and whole-system thinking to plan how land, food production, buildings, resources and human activities can work together. The term was developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 1970s from the idea of “permanent agriculture” and later broadened towards “permanent culture”. Permaculture is an approach, not a certification, so the term alone does not guarantee that a project is organic, regenerative or environmentally low-impact.
What to ask before volunteering
If learning about permaculture is important to you, ask the host which principles, designs or techniques are actually being used and which of them volunteers will encounter in practice. A project may describe itself as permaculture-based even when most volunteer tasks are general gardening, construction or maintenance.
Farm and land-based activities can involve hand tools, lifting, uneven terrain, heat, animals or machinery. Confirm what tasks are expected, what supervision is provided and whether any previous experience is needed.
