Explore parrot volunteering opportunities involving wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, conservation, veterinary care and other projects where parrots, macaws or related birds are genuinely part of the animals supported by the organisation.
Volunteer activities may include preparing food, cleaning enclosures, enrichment, maintaining facilities, monitoring animals or supporting qualified wildlife-care staff. Direct handling should not be assumed to be part of every project.
What are parrots? 🦜
Parrots are birds belonging to the order Psittaciformes, a group that includes macaws, parakeets, cockatoos and many other species. They occur naturally mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. On this archive, parrots should be a meaningful part of the project, animal-care activities or conservation work rather than simply pets belonging to the host.
Parrot care and wildlife welfare
Rescued parrots may come from illegal wildlife trade, injury, confiscation or unsuitable captivity. Ask how animals arrive at the project, whether rehabilitation and release are possible, what veterinary support is available and how permanent residents are cared for.
Parrots can bite, require species-appropriate diets and enrichment, and may be stressed by unnecessary handling or visitor interaction. Volunteers should follow trained staff and should not perform veterinary procedures, hand-feed vulnerable birds or handle wildlife beyond their experience and supervision.
