What is an orchard? 🍎🌳
An orchard is an area where fruit or nut trees are deliberately cultivated, often for harvesting food. Orchards may contain apples, pears, peaches, cherries, citrus, olives, nuts or other tree crops depending on the climate. Smaller mixed fruit-growing spaces may instead be described as fruit gardens.
Orchard work through the seasons
Activities change throughout the year. Volunteers may help plant or care for young trees, prune established trees, manage vegetation, maintain irrigation or paths, collect fallen fruit or assist during harvest. Ask the host which orchard activities are actually expected during your dates.
Pruning, ladders, powered tools and agricultural machinery can require experience and appropriate supervision. Do not undertake unfamiliar technical work without clear instruction and suitable safety equipment.
