Explore volunteer opportunities involving mosaics and mosaic-making as part of artistic, building, renovation or community projects. Volunteers may help create decorative walls, floors, signs, furniture or other artworks using tiles, ceramics, glass, stone or reused materials.
Some projects welcome experienced mosaic artists, while others offer simpler creative activities that can be learned during the exchange. The scale of the work can range from small decorative pieces to larger installations incorporated into buildings or outdoor spaces.
What is a mosaic? 🧩
A mosaic is an image, pattern or decorative surface made by arranging many small pieces of material, often called tesserae. These pieces can be made from ceramic, glass, stone, tile or other materials and are usually fixed to a surface with adhesive or mortar before the spaces between them are finished with grout.
Working on mosaic projects
Before joining, ask what materials and tools are used, whether previous experience is expected and who will guide the work. Cutting ceramic, glass or stone can create sharp edges and dust, so suitable eye protection, gloves, ventilation and safe tool use may be important.
