Explore volunteering and work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. opportunities where helping at a market, stall or similar selling activity is a genuine part of the role. Depending on the project, volunteers may help at farmers markets, community markets, flea markets, yard sales or temporary stalls.
Activities can include preparing a stall, arranging products, packing and transporting goods, speaking with visitors, helping customers or assisting with the sale of farm produce, crafts, second-hand items or other goods.
What counts as market volunteering? 🧺
Market volunteering means that helping at a market, stall, flea market, farmers market, yard sale or similar activity forms a real part of what volunteers do. Simply having a market nearby or visiting one during free time is not enough to make it part of the volunteer role.
Market roles and working conditions
Market activities can range from informal community events to regular commercial sales. Before taking part, ask whether you will handle cash or card payments, stock, customer enquiries or other responsibilities, and what supervision will be provided.
If selling goods or operating a stall is part of a commercial activity, check whether local employment, tax, visa or work-authorisation rules apply. Accommodation or meals offered in exchange for help do not automatically determine whether an activity is legally considered volunteering.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the current market activities, schedule, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or compensation directly with the host. Market days can be seasonal or occasional, so do not assume that the activity described in an older listing still takes place.
