Explore leatherworking volunteer opportunities where making, repairing or decorating leather goods is a genuine part of the practical activities or learning experience.
Projects may include artisan workshops, craft centres, community initiatives or cultural exchanges where participants learn or assist with techniques used to make items such as bags, wallets, belts and other leather goods.
What is leatherworking? 🧵
Leatherworking is the craft of cutting, shaping, stitching, decorating and finishing leather to create useful or decorative objects. Techniques can include hand stitching, tooling, embossing, punching, dyeing and edge finishing, depending on the material and the item being made.
Leatherworking and tanning
Leatherworking usually involves working with leather that has already been prepared. Tanning is the earlier process used to transform raw hides or skins into leather and can involve different equipment, substances and working conditions. A leather craft workshop should therefore not automatically be assumed to involve tanning.
How to use this page
Check the publication date, current activities, expected experience, working hours, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any costs. For practical workshop roles, ask what tools and materials are used, what instruction is provided and whether protective equipment or ventilation is needed for cutting, dyes, adhesives or other finishing products.
If the opportunity is connected with a commercial workshop, clarify whether the exchange is primarily training and cultural exchange or involves regular production work, and check the conditions before applying.
