House Swap 🏠🔑

Private home and hospitality exchange opportunity

Explore house swap and home exchange opportunities for travellers interested in exchanging homes, staying in private properties and experiencing destinations through slower, more independent forms of travel.

A house swap is different from a conventional volunteering or work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host.. The central arrangement is normally the reciprocal use of homes rather than providing a set number of working hours in return for accommodation.

Some listings may be archival or no longer available. Always check the publication date and confirm the current dates, property details and exchange conditions directly with the other party before making travel plans.

What is a house swap?

A house swap, often also called a home exchange, is an arrangement in which people agree to stay in each other’s homes for an agreed period. Exchanges may be simultaneous or arranged at different times, depending on what the participants agree.

The exact arrangement can vary. Some exchanges involve an entire home, while others may involve an apartment, second home or another private property.

House swaps are based heavily on trust and clear communication. Before agreeing, both sides should understand exactly who will stay at the property, for how long and what responsibilities come with the exchange.

House swap, house sitting or work exchange?

These arrangements can overlap, but they are not necessarily the same.

  • House swap: two parties exchange the use of their homes or properties.
  • House sitting: a traveller stays in another person’s home, usually while the owner is away, and may be responsible for the property, pets or plants.
  • Work exchange: accommodation or other benefits are provided in return for an agreed amount of practical help.

Some Voluntouring listings may combine more than one arrangement. For example, a host might propose either a home exchange or a longer stay involving property care. Read the individual announcement carefully and make sure the final agreement is clear before travelling.

What to confirm before exchanging homes

Before making an agreement, confirm:

  • the exact property and location;
  • the exchange dates and number of guests;
  • whether the exchange is simultaneous or non-simultaneous;
  • which rooms and facilities are available;
  • house rules and any restrictions;
  • whether pets, plants or gardens require care;
  • cleaning expectations before departure;
  • utilities and other household costs;
  • keys, security and emergency contacts;
  • insurance and responsibility for accidental damage;
  • cancellation arrangements.

If cars, bicycles, boats or other valuable property form part of the arrangement, agree separately on insurance, licences, permitted users and responsibility for damage.

Safety and trust

Because a house exchange involves giving another person access to a private home, take time to communicate before committing. Consider a video call, verify the identity and contact details of the other party and exchange clear information about the property and expectations.

Avoid sending large payments or sensitive personal documents without understanding who you are dealing with and why the information is required. Keep a written record of the principal conditions agreed between both sides.

Tell someone you trust where you will be staying and keep an alternative accommodation plan where practical.

Costs and travel arrangements

A direct house swap may reduce accommodation costs, but it does not necessarily make the trip free. Participants may still be responsible for transport, insurance, visas, utilities, cleaning, deposits or other agreed expenses.

If any payment is requested, confirm the exact amount, why it is required and the applicable cancellation or refund conditions before making a commitment.

Voluntouring does not organise house swaps, select participants, arrange visas or mediate agreements between travellers. It does not process payments between the parties. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a guarantee of an exchange.

Immigration and local rules

A straightforward home exchange is different from providing work for a host or commercial business. If the arrangement also includes regular work, property management, hospitality duties or other productive activities, check whether immigration or labour rules apply.

For additional guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality and visas and work exchange abroad.
