Explore fish farming volunteer opportunities involving aquaculture, fish ponds, tanks or other systems where fish are raised for food, community livelihoods, agricultural training or local production.
Projects may involve small rural fish ponds, community agriculture programmes or larger aquaculture systems. Tasks vary according to the species, farming method and scale of the project.
What is fish farming? 🐟
Fish farming is a form of aquaculture in which fish are raised in managed environments such as ponds, tanks, cages or other controlled systems. Activities can include stocking fish, feeding, monitoring water conditions and maintaining the facilities used for their growth. It differs from fishing in natural waters, where wild fish are captured rather than raised.
Tasks and practical conditions
Volunteer activities may include feeding fish, cleaning ponds or tanks, maintaining nets and water systems, preparing feed, monitoring basic conditions or helping with other agricultural work connected with the project.
Ask what training and supervision are provided, especially when tasks involve pumps, electrical equipment near water, chemicals, animal handling or unfamiliar machinery. Specialist activities involving fish health, medicines or technical water management should only be carried out with appropriate knowledge and supervision.
