What are business skills? 💼
Business skills can include planning, budgeting, administration, finance, operations, marketing, sales, entrepreneurship and understanding how an organisation develops and manages its activities. The skills required depend on the project and may range from introductory learning to specialist professional support.
Business skills in volunteer projects
Some organisations invite volunteers to help develop small enterprises, train entrepreneurs, improve administrative systems or support income-generating activities. Others offer participants an opportunity to learn how a farm, social enterprise or community project is organised.
A project should not be considered business-related simply because the host operates commercially. If volunteers carry out regular productive duties for a commercial company, the arrangement may raise employment, labour or immigration questions and should be assessed according to the actual activities and local rules.
Roles involving budgets, loans, financial records, personal data or strategic decisions should also have clear responsibilities and appropriate supervision. Volunteers should not be given professional financial or legal responsibilities beyond their competence.
