Bushcraft is a broad term for practical skills used in wild or natural environments. Depending on the context, these may include navigation, shelter building, fire lighting, water management, outdoor cooking, tool use, identifying natural materials and other wilderness or campcraft skills.
Bushcraft, safety and the environment
Bushcraft activities can involve knives, axes, saws, fire, outdoor cooking and exposure to changing weather or remote terrain. Volunteers should receive appropriate instruction and supervision and should not use unfamiliar tools or undertake higher-risk activities without suitable experience.
Local rules also matter. Fires, foraging, cutting vegetation, collecting wood or building temporary shelters may be restricted or prohibited in protected areas or during periods of high fire risk. Follow local regulations and avoid unnecessary damage to vegetation, wildlife and water sources.
