Bears 🐻
Explore bear volunteering opportunities involving sanctuaries, wildlife conservation, research, monitoring, environmental education and projects focused on coexistence between people and bears.
This is a species-related tag. It is intended for opportunities where bears are a genuine subject of the project or volunteer activities, rather than simply animals that may occur somewhere in the surrounding region.
Bear project or bear habitat? 🐻
A project should normally use the Bears tag only when bears are directly relevant to its conservation, research, education, sanctuary or coexistence activities. Occasional sightings or simply living in bear habitat are not enough on their own.
What can bear volunteering involve?
Activities vary considerably. Volunteers may support wildlife monitoring, habitat work, visitor education, research assistance, sanctuary maintenance, food preparation, administration or community programmes designed to reduce conflict between people and bears. Direct contact with bears should never be assumed to be part of a volunteer role.
Wild bears are potentially dangerous animals. Volunteers working in bear habitat should receive appropriate instructions about distance, food and waste storage, field procedures and what to do during an encounter. Feeding, approaching or attempting to handle wild bears should not be treated as ordinary volunteer activities.
