Afrikaans is one of South Africa’s official languages and is also spoken in Namibia and by communities elsewhere. A listing appearing in this archive does not necessarily mean that volunteers must speak Afrikaans or that language lessons are available. South Africa currently recognises 12 official languages, including Afrikaans; Namibia’s official language is English. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
Using Afrikaans during a volunteer exchange
Some hosts may use Afrikaans in daily life while communicating with international volunteers in English or another language. Check the individual listing to see which languages are spoken and whether any particular level is required.
If language practice is an important reason for joining, ask how often Afrikaans is actually used in the household, workplace or community rather than assuming that a project in southern Africa will provide an Afrikaans immersion experience.
