Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, transport arrangements and any fees or contributions directly with the host or organisation.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.
Hospitality exchanges and fair hours
Some listings may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality in exchange for a limited number of hours of help. Other opportunities may have different arrangements, so do not assume that every project includes free food and accommodation.
A typical fair exchange published on Voluntouring may involve around 4 to 5 hours of help per day, approximately 25 hours per week. Schedules and days off vary between hosts, so always check the individual listing and agree on the conditions before travelling.
European Solidarity Corps and pocket money
Some structured volunteering programmes may provide accommodation, food, insurance, travel support or pocket money depending on the project and eligibility conditions.
European Solidarity Corps volunteering is generally aimed at participants aged 18 to 30, although eligibility and project conditions should always be checked in the individual announcement.
Volunteer work and work exchanges in the Netherlands
Dutch rules distinguish genuine voluntary work from regular employment. Official guidance describes voluntary work as unpaid activity carried out for others or society, in the general or social interest, without a profit motive and without replacing paid jobs.
For this reason, an informal exchange involving a hostel, farm, campsite, restaurant or another commercial activity should not automatically be assumed to qualify as volunteer work simply because accommodation or meals are provided instead of wages.
If the activities resemble regular productive work or duties that would otherwise be performed by an employee, ask the host to clarify the legal basis of the arrangement and check the applicable rules before travelling.
Visas and volunteering in the Netherlands
Entry and residence requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and the type of programme or activities. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens do not require a Dutch residence permit and are generally free to work in the Netherlands.
For non-EU citizens participating in the European Solidarity Corps, the Netherlands has a specific residence procedure. The volunteer must have an agreement with a recognised exchange organisation, and the organisation applies for the relevant residence documentation. The permit can be valid for the duration of the voluntary service, up to a maximum of one year.
These arrangements should not be assumed to cover every informal hospitality exchange or unpaid activity. Check your individual situation through the official Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service information on cultural exchange and European Solidarity Corps volunteering.
Insurance and practical arrangements
Make sure your insurance covers the activities involved in the project. Farming, construction, animal care, outdoor work and other practical activities may not automatically be covered by every standard travel policy.
If a contribution or deposit is requested, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and whether it is refundable before making any payment.
