Volunteering opportunities in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and a U.S. territory. Its capital is San Juan. Though its residents are U.S. citizens, they can’t vote in presidential elections unless they live in one of the 50 states. Puerto Rico is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical rainforests, and rich history. It has a mix of Taino, Spanish, African, and U.S. influences, which can be seen in its culture, music, and food. The island has faced economic challenges and recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria in 2017, which caused significant damage. Despite this, Puerto Ricans are known for their vibrant festivals, warm hospitality, and the traditional music and dance style called “salsa”. The coquรญ, a small frog, is a beloved symbol of the island. The El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, is found in Puerto Rico. The island also has a famous observatory in Arecibo, though it was damaged in 2020. Tourists love visiting Old San Juan with its colorful buildings and historic forts.
