Before applying, confirm the activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, local transport, minimum stay and any fees, deposits, allowances or other financial arrangements directly with the host.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

It does not process participant payments between volunteers and host organisations. Visas, volunteering and work exchanges

U.S. immigration rules distinguish between genuine voluntary service, visitor activities, formal exchange programmes and employment. Visitor status or ESTA should not automatically be assumed to permit every unpaid activity or work exchange.

Certain voluntary service programmes organised by qualifying religious or non-profit charitable organisations may be compatible with B-1 visitor rules under specific conditions. This does not mean that regular unpaid work for a farm, hostel, business or other commercial activity is automatically permitted.

Formal exchange programmes, internships or other structured activities may require a different immigration category, such as an exchange visitor visa. Check the actual purpose of the programme rather than relying only on labels such as “volunteer”, “helper” or “cultural exchange”.

Fair exchanges and commercial activities

Accommodation or meals do not automatically make an arrangement volunteering. If a host expects regular productive work that would otherwise be performed by paid staff, confirm whether the activity is legally permitted under your immigration status.

This distinction is particularly important for hospitality businesses, farms, tourism activities and other income-generating projects.
