Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 🇻🇨

Explore volunteer opportunities in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, including animal welfare, non-profit initiatives, community projects and other volunteering or cultural exchange opportunities across this Caribbean island country.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines consists of the main island of Saint Vincent and a chain of smaller Grenadine islands. Volunteer opportunities can therefore take place in very different settings, from more populated areas to small islands where transport, accommodation and access to services may be limited.

The number of opportunities currently published on Voluntouring.org is limited. Always check the publication date and confirm current activities and conditions directly with the host before arranging travel.

Current volunteer opportunities

The country archive currently includes Mayreau Animal Welfare, a non-profit organisation based on the small island of Mayreau in the Southern Grenadines.

The organisation works with neglected, mistreated and abandoned animals on the island, including dogs, cats, goats and sheep, as well as wildlife when help is needed.

The Voluntouring listing was originally published several years ago, but Mayreau Animal Welfare’s current official website still states that the organisation welcomes volunteers and offers self-contained accommodation in a simple wooden house with sea views.

Because volunteer needs can change, confirm dates, activities, accommodation and any required experience directly with the organisation before travelling.

Volunteering on Mayreau

Mayreau is a small Grenadine island, so volunteering there can be quite different from joining a project in a large city or easily accessible mainland destination.

Transport options, shops, medical services and other facilities can be more limited. Ask the host how volunteers normally reach the island, what transport operates during your intended dates and what services are realistically available once you arrive.

For an animal-care placement, also ask what supplies are available locally and whether volunteers are expected to bring any particular clothing, equipment or veterinary supplies.

Animal welfare volunteering

The opportunity currently associated with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines focuses strongly on animal welfare.

Possible activities described by Mayreau Animal Welfare include caring for island animals, walking dogs, helping improve their living conditions and supporting wider animal health and welfare activities.

Animal welfare and veterinary work

Animal-care volunteers should work within their experience and follow the organisation’s procedures. Veterinary diagnosis, prescription medication, invasive treatment and other clinical activities should remain with appropriately qualified and authorised people. Ask what tasks are expected before applying, particularly if a role specifically requests veterinary or veterinary nursing experience.

For more animal-related opportunities, explore the animal welfare volunteering section.

Hurricane season and island travel

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and tropical storms can disrupt ferries, flights, electricity, communications and access to smaller islands.

This is particularly relevant for Mayreau. Hurricane Beryl caused significant damage to infrastructure on Mayreau and Union Island in July 2024, and current UK travel guidance still recommends confirming accommodation and other arrangements before visiting the smaller islands.

If travelling during hurricane season, follow current weather information and local instructions. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ National Emergency Management Organisation also publishes local hurricane information and shelter updates.

Current travel safety

At the time of this review, the United States travel advisory for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is Level 1: Exercise normal precautions.

This does not mean that travel is risk-free. Current UK guidance notes crimes including robbery and assault and recommends normal precautions with belongings and personal safety.

Conditions can change, so check current official travel advice shortly before departure rather than relying on the status shown on this page.

Visas, entry and volunteering

Entry conditions depend on nationality. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines grants different visitor periods and requires advance visas from nationals of certain countries.

Visitor status and permission to undertake work are not necessarily the same thing. Official government information states that non-nationals wishing to take up employment must obtain permission, and work permits are handled separately from visitor entry.

The official information does not provide one universal category covering every possible informal volunteer or work-exchange arrangement. For that reason, do not assume that a visitor entry permission automatically authorises any activity simply because it is unpaid.

Ask the organisation to describe exactly what you will do and check with the relevant Saint Vincent and the Grenadines authority or consular service when necessary.

Health and insurance

Island and remote placements can make access to medical care more complicated than in larger urban areas.

Ask the host where the nearest medical services are, how emergency transport works and whether travel by boat or another island may be necessary for more advanced care.

Make sure your insurance covers the destination, the complete duration of your trip and the activities involved in your volunteer role, particularly animal handling, veterinary support, water activities or other physical work where applicable.

Getting to smaller Grenadine islands

Do not assume that arriving in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines means that the volunteer project is immediately accessible.

For a project on Mayreau or another smaller island, confirm:

  • the recommended international arrival point;
  • which ferry, boat or flight connection is required;
  • how frequently transport operates;
  • whether schedules change according to season or weather;
  • whether the host arranges pickup;
  • what happens if your international flight arrives after the last connection;
  • whether you should plan an overnight stay elsewhere before continuing to the project.

Weather can affect inter-island transport, so leave reasonable flexibility in your itinerary.
