Ask the host about access to medical care and emergency transport, particularly for projects outside major urban areas.

Make sure your insurance covers the destination and the activities you expect to perform. Travel against official government advice can also affect insurance coverage, so check the policy conditions carefully.

Visas and immigration

Do not assume that a tourism or social-visit visa automatically permits volunteering, work exchange or regular NGO duties.

Nigeria has several immigration categories for different purposes, including tourism, cultural exchange, emergency or relief work, internships and employment. The appropriate status depends on what you will actually do, the organisation involved, your nationality and the duration of your stay.

For example, Nigeria’s tourism and ordinary social-visit visa categories specifically restrict employment, while the International Cultural Exchange Visa applies only to qualifying cultural exchange programmes under recognised arrangements.
