This volunteer opportunity in Calgary, Alberta, Canada supports the creation of Sanctuary on Wheels, a project that combines compassionate community care with the calming presence of trained therapy dogs. The initiative aims to build a mobile sanctuary that can bring comfort and companionship to people experiencing dementia, grief, crisis, or end-of-life situations.
Volunteers help with practical tasks linked to the conversion of a bus into this mobile care space. Activities may include painting, organizing materials, helping with insulation work, or assisting with simple carpentry tasks. Those who prefer quieter activities may also help with the daily care of the Briard therapy dogs that are part of the project.
Accommodation and meals are provided in a calm private home environment. Volunteers usually contribute around 2–3 hours of help per day, five days per week. The rest of the time can be used to relax, enjoy the dogs, or explore Calgary’s parks, trails, and nearby mountain areas.
