Alpacas are social and prefer to live in groups. A baby alpaca is called a “cria.” After about 11 months of pregnancy, mother alpacas usually give birth to a single cria, which can stand and walk within a few hours of birth. They are known for their gentle and friendly nature, making them popular in petting zoos and on farms worldwide. Their calm demeanor and soft fleece have endeared them to people of all ages.
