Explore blacksmithing volunteer opportunities and work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. where forging, metalworking or traditional smithing skills are genuinely part of the activities or learning experience.
These opportunities may be found on farms, craft projects, workshops, heritage initiatives or communities where volunteers can observe, learn or assist with practical metalwork under appropriate supervision.
What is blacksmithing? 🔨
Blacksmithing is the craft of shaping metal, traditionally iron or steel, using processes such as heating, hammering, bending and forging. Hand tools commonly include hammers, anvils and tongs, although modern workshops may also use powered forging equipment.
Learning and technical work
A blacksmithing exchange may involve observing an experienced smith, learning basic hammer and anvil techniques, preparing materials, maintaining a workshop or helping with simple supervised projects. More advanced forging, machinery, welding or fabrication may require previous experience.
Casting and blacksmithing are related forms of metalworking but are not the same process. Casting generally involves pouring molten metal into a mould, while forging shapes solid metal through impact or pressure.
Hot metal, sparks, sharp edges, heavy tools, furnaces and forging equipment can cause serious injury. Volunteers should receive clear instruction, suitable protective equipment and close supervision, and should not operate specialist machinery or undertake advanced forging independently without appropriate competence. Forging standards specifically recognise hazards from heat, machinery and flying material.
