Deniyaya volunteer project in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, volunteer, Deniyaya

The volunteer opportunity in Deniyaya, Sri Lanka, featured on Voluntouring.org, is a grassroots initiative led by Sidney Karunawardana.
After returning to his homeland, Sidney became deeply concerned about the exploitation of the Sinharaja Rainforest—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—by hotel chains, tea plantations, and poachers. In response, he established guesthouses in Deniyaya and Polhena, Matara, to fund conservation efforts and raise awareness among visitors. Volunteers are invited to assist with various tasks, including supporting guests at a meditation monastery, developing an organic fruit garden, and participating in rainforest conservation campaigns. Activities may also involve teaching, gardening, eco-building, and promoting sustainable practices. Accommodation is provided, and volunteers typically contribute five hours a day, six days a week.
