The Baldeo family is a modern nomadic family of four—Andre, Becky, and their children Rico and Tiana—who left their conventional life in Cape Town in 2018 to travel the world while volunteering and homeschooling along the way. Andre, originally from North London with Swiss and Guyanese roots, and Becky, from South Africa, decided to embark on this journey to provide their children with diverse cultural experiences and to engage in meaningful travel.
Their travels have taken them across Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. They’ve participated in various volunteer projects, such as turtle conservation on Tioman Island and working at an animal welfare sanctuary in Malaysia. One of their most memorable experiences was climbing Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia, where Andre and his son Rico reached the summit together, creating a special father-son moment.
The Baldeos document their journey and share insights into their nomadic lifestyle on their blog, Straight Outta Suburbia, and on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Their story offers inspiration for families considering alternative lifestyles that combine travel, education, and community service.
