Safety rules for volunteers working with animals
Volunteer projects on farms and in animal sanctuaries can be rewarding, but they also involve real responsibilities. Feeding animals, cleaning enclosures, opening gates or spending time inside animal areas may look simple at first, yet each task comes with risks. Animals can be curious, nervous, territorial or protective, and even friendly animals may react suddenly if they feel stressed or surprised.
For this reason, hosts should explain the real risks of working with animals before volunteers begin. This includes basic handling rules, which animals are safe to approach, what behaviour to avoid, and what to do if an animal becomes frightened or aggressive. Volunteers should also be told if special clothing or shoes are needed, and whether some tasks require supervision or previous experience.
A good host does not present animal work as only fun or picturesque. Honest preparation helps volunteers stay safe and also protects the animals from poor handling. Clear instructions, calm behaviour and respect for boundaries make a big difference. In a responsible volunteer exchange, animal care should always be based on safety, patience and realistic expectations.
