Thórsmörk trail volunteers (Trailteam.is)

Trailteam.is (Land and Forest Iceland) hosts international volunteer teams working on hiking trail maintenance and practical nature conservation in the Thórsmörk area of South Iceland, including Goðaland. Work weeks are described as more than 30 hours, and some of that time includes hiking to the work sites (often around 1.5 hours on an average day). There is no participation fee. Food and campsite facilities are provided, but volunteers bring their own tents. Placement lengths and dates can change each season, so the official website is the best place to check current options and application forms.

Who this suits

This programme is a good fit for people who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes, and are ready for a physically demanding outdoor project.

Requirements

Iceland’s changeable weather means volunteers need warm clothing, good waterproofs, and a sturdy tent. Due to the strenuous nature of the work, participants should be physically fit. Many work sites are remote, so hiking to reach them is part of the routine.

Participants must be 20+ years. Participants organise and pay for their own travel to and from the meeting point in Thórsmörk, and they are responsible for arranging travel insurance.

Operations team
Be part of the operations team

The operations team includes volunteer team leaders and supports project logistics and the day to day running of the programme. Practical training is provided for trail work.
