Volunteer at Inti Eco Lodge in the Amazonas, Iquitos, Peru πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ͺ

Volunteering in the Amazonas – Peru sustainable living – Inti Eco Lodge

Volunteer in the Amazonas – We are an eco-lodge in the Peruvian Amazon which has been in construction since 2014.

The eco-lodge aims to be a far business in the form of a well-being centre which also teaches about sustainability and permaculture, while helping the local communities, with clean water access among other things. The volunteers will be working with the plants using permaculture and biodynamics, bio-construction with adobe (a mix of clay and sand), and checking the structures for termites.

The story

β€œI’m Anne, I’ve been living in Peru since 2012 and now have my residency. I studied in a business school back in Paris, majoring in international business. I then received a second Master’s degree in Australia, majoring in Business in International Tourism and Hospitality Management.

I’m currently building up my own travel agency here in Peru, which will focus on travelling differently: eco-tourism, communitarianism, respecting the local economy, and local culture and helping NGOs in Peru while travelling. I got the idea to do this eco-lodge 2 years ago in Iquitos: I was studying shamanism and master plants with a shaman from there. I fell in love with the Amazon and its communities, and found land to get my project started.”

How many volunteers?
Hours of help

The accommodation is in a dormitory with a single bed and trunk each

Benefits

The volunteers’ benefits are free accommodation, use of the pool, volleyball ground, slackline etc, and 10% off at the Karma CafΓ© in Iquitos

Things to do in your free time

If volunteers have special skills they can share: we can have workshops, e.g. yoga, meditation, massages, etc.

The lodge is in the middle of the Amazon jungle, so it’s possible to see animals like snakes, monkeys, butterflies, frogs, and sloths.

Languages are spoken

Ideally, the main language is Spanish but we also speak English and French.

Technology related info

There is no internet access or electricity for that matter, so we recommend volunteers bring a headlamp or flashlight and an external battery or solar charger if they wish to use electronic devices

How to get here

We get there by minibus (1hr 30mins) and then by boat (2hrs). The lodge is on the Itaya river south of Iquitos, Peru.

More information

Our aim is to create a self-sufficient lodge/wellness centre where guests and volunteers can learn about sustainability and permaculture in a jungle environment, and about health and well-being through nutrition and other activities such as yoga, meditation and various sports. The economy generated by the lodge will enable us to help the neighbouring village of San Martin with projects such as access to drinking water and education, as well as already providing work for some of the villagers, meaning they can work close to home.

We have been welcoming volunteers (over 500) ever since the beginning of the project.

They have been helping us, among other things, with construction and bio construction (using Adobe bags), permaculture, carpentry, and community life chores such as cooking.

Type of help

We are looking for Volunteers/professionals to build an Eco Lodge in the Amazon.Β  Any kind of help in sustainability:

The aim is to create a community based on well-being and self-sufficiency, where everyone can live healthily, learn how to live sustainably, relax, heal, find entertainment, develop projects and express creativity.

Eco-building & permaculture design notes

Inti Eco Lodge will be made out of wood taken from trees of the land, with each tree being replaced immediately with a new one. Also, we are going to be using recycled materials from Iquitos and its surroundings. We will use Earthship’s concepts such as collecting and using water from the rain, producing electricity from the sun and wind and treating and reusing sewage.

There will also be a heating and cooling system for the best comfort in any climate. We will develop a permaculture system (Hugerlkutlure) and greenhouses on the land to grow fruits, vegetables and flowers all year long. We are to build a place that suits and fits the environment and its people by using all that it gives us. Our goal is to adapt ourselves to the land and befriend nature while creating the smallest ecological footprint as possible.
