A Volunteer Adventure in Namibia
If you’re looking for an unforgettable volunteer and travel experience that combines adventure, community, and the chance to work in one of Africa’s most breathtaking landscapes, Donkerhuk West Farm in Namibia might be calling your name. Located along the scenic C28 gravel road between the coastal town of Swakopmund and Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, Donkerhuk West offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in farm life on the edge of the Namib Desert.
About Donkerhuk West Farm
Donkerhuk West is a family-run haven where the desert meets community living. They welcome volunteers to join their team in operating a small guest business, including a campsite and self-catering tents. Volunteers play a key role in ensuring visitors’ welcoming, relaxing stay. As a volunteer, you’ll also enjoy the chance to live with the hosts, share meals, and dive into the rhythm of farm life in Namibia.
What you’ll do
Volunteers at Donkerhuk West have a range of responsibilities, so every day brings something new.
Here’s a taste of what you’ll be doing:
- Guest services
- From welcoming guests and managing the reception to housekeeping and general guest care, you’ll make sure our visitors feel at home.
- Farm work
- Help with animal care, including cattle, poultry, and pigs. We also tend a vegetable garden and orchard for our personal use, so there’s plenty of gardening to do.
- Maintenance & repair
- You’ll be involved in small repairs around the farm, from keeping water points functioning to evaluating game cameras that track local wildlife.
- Homemade farm products
- Get hands-on with creating farm products, from fruit preserves to dairy, poultry, and meat items.
What you’ll get
In exchange for your help, hosts provide free food and accommodation on the farm. You’ll have your own cosy room in the farmhouse, with a shared bathroom and limited satellite Wi-Fi—enough for essential emails and WhatsApp messages to keep in touch with friends and family.
While basic meals are provided, alcohol, soft drinks, snacks, and any special dietary supplements are up to you.
Arrival & logistics
The farm is remote, so the journey is part of the adventure!
Hosts can arrange transportation from Swakopmund or Karibib, with a recommended shuttle from Windhoek for those flying in.
- Volunteers should aim to arrive and depart on weekdays so that the hosts can combine your pickup with supply trips.
