Geloi Wetland ESC program 2022

Would you like to live for 2 months in Sicily participating in a nature conservation project? Then this is your chance! We value your motivation and curiosity about environmental issues and the local community but be advised that this project involves a lot of “getting your hands dirty” in hands-on conservation actions (e.g., planting trees, building fauna refuges and nest boxes).

About Geloi Wetland – Help us build a sanctuary for biodiversity! 🌱🦔🐸

We restore wetlands and give migratory birds a safe place in Sicily, Italy. 🦆🌍

GELOI is a stopover site for migratory species that amass in this place that, in Sicily’s Plain of Gela region, is the only one where wetlands form and last up to late spring. This is precisely the reason for its uniqueness and is also why we need to protect it.

We imagine a safe place for birds that pass through here; a place where you do not hear hunting shots but bird’s songs.
Among the unique traits of Geloi certainly, the most important one is the presence of a conspicuous breeding population of Collared pratincole (Glareola pratincola) during the spring. The Collared pratincole population in the Plains of Gela amounts to half the population of the whole of Italy and this data alone should convey the importance of establishing a protected area, safe from illegal hunting and bad agricultural practices that affect the nesting of this species.
Other notable species to be found in Geloi are, in no particular order, White stork (Ciconia ciconia) with the largest breeding population in Italy at around 40 pairs, Lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni), European roller (Coracias garrulus) with the largest population in Sicily and the Eurasian stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus).

For all these reasons, the Plains of Gela area, therefore Geloi as well, is a Special Protected Area.

Requirements:

FOR EU volunteers resident in

Aged 18-30.

🌍ESC Location:

Niscemi, Sicily (IT) – Activities take place in Geloi Wetland.

Activities
  1. Environmental awareness: raise awareness with activities aimed at local citizens and kids, collaborate with the activities of our educational centre or with local writers and painters on educational activities.
  2. Hands-on activities: work on protecting the fauna and flora of our environmental sanctuary Geloi Wetland. There you are going to help our operators
    1. planting trees,
    2. cultivate organic products,
    3. carry out environmental surveillance activities
    4. learning about Nature.

Benefits
  1. Pocket money of 5€ per day plus 50€ per week for your food expenses.
  2. The travel costs to Sicily and back are also funded entirely or partially, based on the EU distance calculator.

Esc in Sicily – What about COVID-19? 

Some activities will be done online, mainly the ones involving environmental awareness classes with kids while activities in Geloi Wetland will carry on as usual. At your arrival, you will be given all the information about how to safely carry out all activities and you will be given personal protective equipment.
All ESC volunteers are also entitled to private health insurance.
