Kolûba volunteer programs – Learn how to build with earth, straw and wood

Alternative Building Collective project – Update April 2022– Now open to those into woodworking. Volunteering is now open to anyone with some experience in woodworking and at least 3 weeks of availability.

Our mission at Kolûba

Kolûba is all about alternative building: a cleaner, healthier and more personal approach to housing. We work with landowners to turn architectural dreams into reality. Ultimately our goal is to push natural building towards a broader recognition and more professional standards. In a world where fossil fuels-based heating/cooling has become the norm, where local-sourced natural materials are neglected and where quality workmanship gives way to cheap prefabricated structures, we want to show that other options are right under our feet.

Earth, straw and wood combine in our projects to move beyond shelter and reconnect with what houses should be: a refuge where one may find peace and comfort.

Location:

Doğalı – Ida in the Kazdağlar mountains of Çanakkale.

The volunteer exchange (updated April 2022)

2Our current project is called Doğalı. It is located in the deep countryside near Bayramiç and Çan in the Çanakkale province, roughly 400km from Istanbul.

This year’s work will include mostly woodwork with some timber framing. We will complete a treehouse and a toilet unit. By mid-summer a larger building will be started.

The accommodation

Two showers and dry toilets are available, but volunteers have to camp. You will also have access to a washing machine and (slow) wifi.
Living conditions are down to the very essentials and the closest shop is 50km away, but we go to town twice a week in case you need something.

Diet

We provide three meals a day prepared by a cook, all fresh and local products.

Requirements

At least basic experience in building is required. Please only apply if you have some past experience with wood and a strong interest in craftsmanship.

We will take volunteers from May 15th till early November 2022
