Avnø Oasis, an eco-village and health sanctuary in Denmark, will be organizing an open day on Sunday 26 March 2023. The event will commence at 10 AM and continue until 4 PM. The agenda for the day includes a tour of the property, a presentation about Avnø Højskole after lunch, and an exhibition in the afternoon featuring the projects created during the three-month Health, Happiness, and Green Living course, which is a collaboration between Gaia Education and LØS (GEN-Denmark), presented by some of the students.
Avnø Oasis ecovillage is located in a protected nature reserve next to the Avnø Naturcenter in Lundby, Denmark. The address of the venue is Flyvervej 10, 4750 – Lundby. The event is entirely free of charge, but donations are welcome to cover costs, and guests who would like to have lunch are requested to make a reservation.

Volunteer opportunity in an ecovillage in Denmark
Our place an aspiring ecovillage in Denmark, is in the process of building up a co-housing community, a People’s College (højskole) and several green projects. Our main language is English, so your English language needs to be at a level, where we can have a comfortable conversation at the dinner table and where you can participate in meetings. We are looking for long-term volunteers (2-12 months) as well as potential community members, who are ready to dedicate their energy and skills to help to build up our Eco-village. Prior experience and skills are appreciated, but your motivation to learn and to grow is the most important thing.
We are only able to receive volunteers from European countries due to visa requirements and the tax rules of Denmark.
Our mission is to accelerate the transition that needs to happen in regards to health, work, community & resources on the personal, cultural and social level to secure optimal living conditions for ourselves and future generations. We aim to create a living example of the new paradigm. Our guiding principal is “We compassionately connect to ourselves, each other & the environment and contribute towards a thriving planet”.
Our place is situated next to the sea in a nature reserve area, 100 km from Copenhagen. We have three buildings with a commercial kitchen, large dining hall, several living rooms, bedrooms with private bathrooms, library, fitness room, gym hall, classrooms and auditorium.
Especially WANTED:
- People, who are interested in staying long term (2-12 months) and taking on the role of leading projects. A Danish speaking person to translate written materials from English to Danish. A Danish speaking person, who wants to do bookkeeping and other administrative tasks.
- Someone very good on Social Media, like a Social Media Manager, that can take the leadership in this area, and regularly post on our social media.
Someone with good skills in videography and video editing to create an online course and help the Social Media Manager. - 2 people with good skills in hospitality.
Anyway, during your stay, you could get involved in different areas of our work here:
- Organic gardening & permaculture design
- Macrobiotic cooking
- Maintenance of buildings & land
- Administration
- Communication & marketing
- Establishing green projects such as the construction of local renewable heat and energy systems, different kinds of eco-entrepreneurship
- Community-building
- Personal development
- Teaching in our Peoples College
- In addition to these, ecovillage life includes a lot of less glamorous tasks such as dishwashing, cleaning or working outside in the rain.
Some of what is voluntary work now in our start-up phase may turn into paid jobs later for people, who become long term community members.
Accommodation
Volunteers get their own room with a bathroom, except in case of big events, where rooms are needed for guests, volunteers may be required to share a room with 1-2 other volunteers.
Food
The community kitchen serves 3 meals every day and sometimes a snack in the afternoon. The food is organic, 97 % plant-based and prepared using macrobiotic principles and if animal foods (fish and eggs) are served, a vegan option is available if anybody wants it.
Free time
In your free time, you can participate in communal activities, initiate activities you like, or spend time alone. We are in a nature reserve area, so you can take walks and explore the surroundings! We also have some bikes available. You can also use the gym, fitness centre (once it’s ready), ping pong, billiard table, pool table, games and library.
As a community, we sometimes sing, play games or watch a movie or do other social activities.
Sometimes it is possible to partake in open workshops and events.
