Volunteer programs in Cameroon

Finding affordable volunteer programs in Cameroon does not have to mean purchasing an expensive international placement package. Cameroon has a national volunteering system, local nonprofit organisations, conservation initiatives and funded international service programs that recruit volunteers through their own channels. The Cameroon volunteering page on Voluntouring.org currently contains only a small number of listings. For this article, we therefore looked beyond our own directory for established organisations and structured programs that people can investigate directly.

What we mean by affordable volunteering

A program can have no participation fee without making the entire experience free. Flights, accommodation, meals, local transport, visas, insurance and vaccinations may still be the volunteer’s responsibility.

Other forms of volunteering operate differently. Government or international service programs can provide a living allowance, housing, insurance or travel support but normally involve formal recruitment and longer commitments.

For this article, we distinguish between no advertised participation fee, self-funded volunteering and funded or supported service. When costs are not published, applicants should ask directly rather than assuming that an opportunity is free.

1. Programme National de Volontariat Cameroun

One of the most important options to know about is the Programme National de Volontariat Cameroun (PNV), the country’s national volunteering program.

Its mission is to mobilise citizens, particularly young Cameroonians, for voluntary activities connected to social, economic and environmental development. Areas of intervention include education, health, environment and economic development.

The PNV currently operates an online system where prospective volunteers can create an account and follow available opportunities.

The program’s official framework recognises both national and foreign volunteers. Foreign volunteers are recruited according to assignment needs and agreements with partner organisations, so this should not be interpreted as an open international travel placement.

For international readers, PNV is particularly useful for understanding Cameroon’s own volunteering ecosystem rather than approaching the country only through foreign placement agencies.

2. France Volontaires in Cameroon

France Volontaires has a long-established presence in Cameroon and operates an Espace Volontariats in Yaoundé. The organisation reported that nearly 240 volunteers under different recognised statuses were hosted in Cameroon during 2025.

Its opportunities include Volontariat de Solidarité Internationale (VSI), international civic service and other forms of structured international volunteering.

Eligibility varies between programs and missions. Applicants should read the specific conditions rather than assuming that every opportunity is available to every nationality or age group.

3. United Nations Volunteers in Cameroon

United Nations Volunteers (UNV) provides national and international volunteer assignments with United Nations agencies operating in Cameroon.

This is structured service rather than a fee-based volunteer travel program. Selected UN Volunteers receive allowances and other entitlements according to the volunteer category, contract and duty station.

Assignments can involve education, health, child protection, communications, development, humanitarian work, project management and other professional fields.

Some Cameroon assignments are for national volunteers and require local citizenship or residency, while others may be open to international candidates. Always check the volunteer type shown in the individual Description of Assignment.

4. Peace Corps Cameroon

Peace Corps has worked in Cameroon since 1962. Its programs currently focus on areas including education and community health.

Unlike a paid volunteer holiday, Peace Corps provides housing, a monthly living allowance and coverage of necessary medical and dental care during service.

Traditional Peace Corps Volunteer service is restricted to eligible U.S. citizens aged 18 or older, while Peace Corps Response is designed primarily for experienced professionals.

5. Cameroon Debate Association

Not every useful volunteer role involves conservation or international development agencies. The Cameroon Debate Association (CDA) is a Cameroonian civil society organisation founded in 2009 and based in Yaoundé.

Its work involves education, public speaking, youth leadership, dialogue, advocacy, peacebuilding and community participation. The organisation remains active in 2026 through programs including the Cameroon Nationals, also known as COCAM.

CDA accepts volunteers with skills including project management, communications, graphic design, translation, fundraising, media production, web development and community action.

The general volunteer page describes commitments ranging from around twelve months to several years, while some individual projects use shorter volunteer periods. The current COCAM program, for example, recruits locally based volunteers for part-time participation over approximately six months.

6. Limbe Wildlife Centre

For wildlife conservation, the Limbe Wildlife Centre offers one of the most transparent volunteer programs we found in Cameroon.

The Centre cares for rescued wildlife affected by illegal trade and other threats. Volunteers may assist experienced staff with animal observation, food preparation, feeding, enclosure cleaning and enrichment. Longer-term volunteers can also contribute professional skills in areas such as veterinary care, education, research, administration, engineering and construction.

The organisation normally recommends a minimum stay of two weeks. Short-term volunteers generally work five to six days per week.

This is therefore not completely free for a short-term international visitor, but its transparent cost structure makes it easier to evaluate than programs that reveal substantial fees only after an application.

7. Skills-based volunteering with One Green Africa

One Green Africa (OGA) is a Cameroon-based environmental organisation working on areas including waste management, climate action, water management, community development and environmental awareness.

Its current volunteer page lists openings for social media managers, graphic designers and copywriters. The organisation also describes potential roles requiring environmental science, wildlife conservation, community outreach, research, project management and technical skills.

This makes OGA potentially interesting for people who can contribute remotely or through specific professional skills rather than looking for a packaged volunteer trip.

Which programs are most suitable for international volunteers?

Several opportunities in this article are primarily intended for Cameroonian residents rather than people planning a short volunteering trip from abroad.

This is not necessarily a disadvantage. Local volunteering can provide stronger continuity and does not need to be designed around international tourism.

For someone travelling specifically to Cameroon, the clearest structured international routes in this selection are currently France Volontaires, United Nations Volunteers and Peace Corps. Limbe Wildlife Centre also explicitly accepts international applicants, although it charges short-term participants and its location requires careful consideration of current security advice.

Before contacting a local organisation, international applicants should explain:

• where they currently live;
• how long they can realistically commit;
• their relevant skills and qualifications;
• whether they are looking for on-site or remote work;
• whether they require accommodation or logistical support.

How to check a program before joining

Low cost alone does not determine whether a volunteer program is responsible. Before committing to any opportunity in Cameroon, try to understand the organisation, the role and the local context.

• Confirm every cost. Ask about accommodation, food, local transport, administration charges and any mandatory contribution.
• Ask for the exact location. This is particularly important in Cameroon because security conditions vary substantially between regions.
• Check current travel advice. Do not rely on old blog posts or previous volunteers’ experiences when official security conditions may have changed.
• Understand the work. Ask about weekly hours, supervision, training and what skills the organisation genuinely needs.
• Respect professional boundaries. Health, education, wildlife care and work with vulnerable people may require appropriate qualifications and supervision.
• Check safeguarding procedures. This is especially important for programs involving children, patients, displaced people or other vulnerable groups.
• Arrange appropriate insurance. Confirm that the policy covers the exact region, activities, medical treatment and evacuation if necessary.
• Verify immigration requirements. Calling an activity volunteering does not automatically mean that it is permitted under every type of visitor visa or entry status.

Can you volunteer in Cameroon without paying large placement fees?

Yes. Cameroon offers several alternatives to purchasing an expensive commercial volunteer package.

The national PNV system connects volunteering to local development and can provide an allowance depending on the assignment. France Volontaires currently offers a fully supported VSI mission, while UNV and Peace Corps provide structured service with financial and practical support.

Local organisations such as Cameroon Debate Association also recruit volunteers directly without advertising an international participation package.

Wildlife volunteering requires a more nuanced comparison. Limbe Wildlife Centre charges international short-term participants €250 per week, while Cameroonian volunteers do not pay fees and some skilled long-term positions include support.

The useful question is therefore not simply whether a program is free. Ask what costs actually exist, what they pay for, what support volunteers receive, whether your contribution is genuinely needed and whether travelling to the exact project location is currently appropriate.
