Join a Conservation Effort to Protect Marine Life and Educate Communities
The Atoll Marine Centre, based in Naifaru, Maldives, is seeking to hire a Sea Turtle Veterinarian to start in July 2023. The position offers a monthly stipend of $300, and applicants with experience in sea turtle or reptile veterinary care are preferred.
About the role
The Sea Turtle Veterinarian will be responsible for the treatment and clinical assessment of sea turtles, many of whom are caught in ghost nets or are victims of boat strikes. In addition, the veterinarian will operate a veterinary clinic for domestic and stray cats, providing spays, vaccinations, and various treatments. The Sea Turtle Veterinarian will also be responsible for educating the local community and international volunteers on animal husbandry, marine organism biology, and human impacts on marine life. The Atoll Marine Centre runs a vet student program in which the Sea Turtle Veterinarian will train university students in sea turtle and cat surgeries and treatments.
What to expect
As the position is based in Naifaru, applicants should be aware that the island follows Islamic law. This means that pork, alcohol, drugs, and other religious materials that are not Muslim are prohibited. Women are also expected to dress conservatively and cover-up. However, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to attend weekly excursions to explore the Maldives and its amazing wildlife, as well as dive at some of the best dive sites in the world.
