Pilgrims Rest is much more than just a pilgrim hostel to me. It is a place born from a last wish, from friendship, from loss, and from a vision.
When Michael “Mahes” Schallhart passed away in 2019 after a serious illness, he left behind not only deep grief, but also a heartfelt wish: that this special place should continue to live on. I took over Pilgrims Rest during the difficult time of the pandemic, a moment when many certainties had disappeared and financial resources had almost completely dried up. Despite major investments, many challenges, and only with a great deal of heart, courage, and the support of dear friends, this last wish slowly became reality. ❤️
Today, Pilgrims Rest is a temporary home for pilgrims walking the Caminho de Santiago along the Caminho Português da Costa, on the original coastal route from Caminha through Vila Nova de Cerveira to Valença and onward to Tui. It is not just a place to stay overnight, but a place where people can arrive, breathe, rest, and feel truly welcome, for one night or for several days.
With fresh, healthy food, fruits and vegetables from our own garden or the local market, a special breakfast, and a lot of love and dedication, a place has grown here that has been carried by many wonderful people over the years.
Pilgrims Rest is proof that a final wish can become a vision, and that a vision can become reality.
For the coming season we are still looking for engaged volunteers who would like to share and support this philosophy. In exchange, we offer accommodation, meals, and a small pocket money.
