Border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia (updated 28 July 2025)
Ongoing military clashes have broken out along the Thailand–Cambodia border, particularly near the disputed Preah Vihear and Ta Muen Thom temple zones. Since 24 July 2025, artillery shelling, landmines, and even airstrikes have hit various villages and military outposts in both countries. The situation is escalating and presents serious safety concerns for travellers, especially those involved in voluntourism.
As of today, over 35 people have lost their lives (including civilians), and more than 200,000 residents have been displaced. Multiple provinces in Thailand – including Surin, Sisaket, Ubon Ratchathani, and Buriram – are under martial law, while Cambodia has declared its own emergency zones across Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey.
All land border crossings between the two nations are currently closed, with only limited humanitarian exemptions allowed. Most embassies, including those of the United States, India, South Korea, and Australia, have issued urgent travel advisories recommending citizens avoid all non-essential travel within 50 km of the border.
What this means for voluntourists and travellers ⚠️
If you’re currently in Thailand or Cambodia, or planning to visit as a volunteer, you should avoid all travel to the affected provinces. Even outside the immediate conflict zone, logistical disruptions are possible. Airlines may reroute flights, road transport may be blocked, and humanitarian missions are operating with extreme caution.
Volunteers intending to work near the border should postpone or choose a different region entirely. While some local organizations continue their efforts in safer areas, access to border-adjacent communities is restricted and potentially dangerous.

- Do not travel to Surin, Sisaket, Ubon Ratchathani, or Buriram (Thailand), or to Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey (Cambodia).
- Monitor embassy announcements and news from Reuters, AP News, and Politico.
- If already in-country, register with your embassy and establish an emergency contact plan.
- Avoid demonstrations, roadblocks, and any area near military checkpoints.
The situation is fluid!
Although ceasefire talks are underway, violence has continued despite international pressure. If you’re travelling for cultural exchange or volunteer purposes, it’s best to delay your trip or relocate to a safer region for now.

Consider supporting their efforts remotely by donating or spreading awareness. But please – do not attempt to travel to these zones unless under the guidance of a registered NGO with security clearance.
